Southern IA | 10% open is ideal, if you got 100% you are investing too much in your cattle and nurturing along the weaklings. Letting the bottom 10% in fertility cull themselves out every year pays huge divedends in herd fertility in the future years. I got some cows that probably wouldn't qualify for the cow beauty contests but they are the 10+ years old and calving the first few days of calving season every year. If I had 100% bred every year I'd be more concerned than having a few opens every year | |
