+2- definitely cover the top of the pile. as for the bales, if it was mine i wouldn't mess with them make a pile all the way to the ground an put dirt around the bottom plastic to hold in place. $8.00 dollar corn translates into $80+ a ton silage its just to expensive to have spoilage and the little bit it costs to cover it is a small amount of $ compared to your feed pile.
