SE IL and SW IN | Late planted (Sept 15- Oct 1 here) planted hairy vetch does not produce enough fall growth to provide the energy to survive the late winter freeze/thaw/dessication that is common here. It does best here in our better drained soils with good fertility. Since we have identified a variety that does better in this environment, we have expanded the range where we have had success with it, but I think that 500 acres will be the maximum number of acres that we will be willing/able to manage in this way. | |
