Sounds like it grew but you don't have a plant now.

Wireworms will take plants like that, you didn't say if you had treatment or not on the seed to take care of them. We had to quit planting confection sunflowers early because if cold weather hit and they just sat there, the wireworms would just keep working until they killed a lot of them. If they grew fast, it wasn't much of a problem.

Also could be cutworms, people are kind of used to cutworms not taking early corn but they can if there are enough they just keep chewing. Corn runs out of food and dies. Energy in the kernel all used up.

there are other such pests, we can get that from geese, they usually just graze it and it comes back but if it's grazed repeatedly, it dies.

Gophers, mice could do it too.

Did you visit the field repeatedly and the corn never did come?

In my area, I would of course have to take a look at salinity as well, you can go from good growth to poor growth to no growth in just a few feet. Sometimes seed will just sit there in moist soil and never germinate, sometimes it germinates but doesn't emerge. Not knowing your field, I can't say whether salinity could be a problem. We have a lot more this year because it was dry the last half of last summer and almost no snow, normally salinity increases over the summer, then drops before planting next spring as the water moves the salts down a bit. This year, that down movement basically didn't happen so the salt spots are much bigger than people are used to.
