Subject: Re: 4 vs 5" tile

Thanks for the info Dave. One of the things I have noticed is that our main lines seem to be clean but some of the smaller tile sometimes has some dirt in it. Could part of the reason be because the shorter runs do not need as much capacity so they do not have the water flow to keep them flushed out? My question would be if the one's with silt were fairly short runs that didn't have to move a lot of water and thus did not get flushed out or if there were other causes.

Dave, your post is very helpful because you are giving a response based on tile that have actually been dug up that have been in for several decades. I know I am putting you on the spot to try and remember the details but the more information we all have the better to figuring out what the best thing to do is on each of our farms. If you can remember how long those runs were and how big of tile and if they had any intakes to let water in to wash them out, that would be a huge help.

Part of the reason I am asking for a lot of info is because I had a tile supplier tell me that 3" were some of the least likely to silt up because of the flow. He did not say the same thing about the 4" compared to 5" though. His position on the 3" had something to do with the water turbulence.
