Agree with Bleedred it depends on soil type and common practices for your area. Some areas with tight clay soils small tile is used in a closely spaced grid pattern. In our area with the majority sand and loam soils mains tend to go through swails and laterals off that where needed,but no one uses less than 5 inch and sock covered is common. Larger size tile is valid to help cover mistakes and it costs no more to lay 5 or 6 than it does 4. We can get silt in tile and capacity is reduce if sock is not use where needed.
