Strangely enough, this came up in a Guns and Ammo I was reading last night. The two aren't the same, .25 caliber vs. .22. According to Bob Forker in the G&A Reloads column, some guy named Gebby made the .22 Varminteer which "may have used" the .250-3000 case necked down to .22. Remington did the same thing and got SAAMI standardization for the .22-250 in 1965.
