Subject: Re: Silage Question

Northwest Iowa
Save the money on stone and lime and all the time you will spend cleaning bunks and just make a compacted dirt area to pile the silage. Hove a slight slope and always feed out up hill so the rain drains away. Unless you have an excellant loader operator you will be feeding alot of stuff the cattle will not eat. I am in northern Iowa and have about the same soils you do and lime is not needed. Pour concrete next year if you decide you want to feed the silage again, why spend the money on a trial run? I have put corn silage on dirt for many years and works fine if water drains away. March and april normally are the only times you would like a differant base, but still managable with a little fore thought on placement. Second thought, if you like, next year put down an ashphalt pad instead as the acid of the silage does not eat away at it.
