Northeast Iowa | Tyson claims they were actually buying more cattle closer to Dakota City for their Denison plant than they were closer to Denison. The Tama effort this time is going under Iowa Premium Beef. The concept sounds good, but it's one thing to have people say in a focus group that they'd prefer to buy product where they know the background and something completely different to get them to actually part with the dollars to make the purchase on a large scale day in and day out. Selling a handful to consumers via direct marketing and/or farmers markets is one thing. Keeping the lights on and bills paid at a packing plant is a whole different deal.
I hope they can make it work. It will be interesting to see the grid they use if they get it going. I've sent fed cattle 700-800 miles the last several years. The trucking bill isn't pretty, but the net dollars are worthwhile. | |
