Subject: RE: shelled corn or silage

NC Indiana
We chopped corn silage this past yr for the first time and are using it for rations for 30+ blk calves and 35 cows. It works real good and makes a cheaper ration. Corn grain is easier to feed, just fill a steer stuffer and check it in x days. Silage is bulky and you're feeding it at least once a day on the calves. We either fill 5 gal bucket, or if I can get away w/ it, I've measure how much a loader bucket holds and will fork silage out of the loader into the bunks. Nice thing about the silage is you can put up a yrs feed in a few day. We chopped areas where the corn wasn't doing as well, N loss due to wet weather or end rows and added value to those acres. We rented the bagger, chopper, and bought an older wagon and rented a couple others. We're planning to plant corn for silage on a few acres this yr and I've found a few choppers around for $3-5k. We'll also either bale or buy corn stalks and hay to put out for feed. And we winter out on corn stalks.
