They aren't getting screwed, they're running of a spread. Most analyze by period what assets and liabilities are repricing and adjust accordingly to keep the desired spread or net return. Banks are one of the few businesses required by law to make a profit, if not the feds arrange a sale mighty quick, sometimes without the owner even knowing it!
