Subject: Re: thinking of going no till

don@nebr - 11/30/2011 09:19  Best attachment for a 7000 I ever owned was accuplant slicer tips under the row unit. dont need keetons or rebounders with those and they last forever unlike any other metal used in soil now days.

Ahem.  Don, there's a big difference between firming (smearing) the soil in the bottom of the furrow before the seed is dropped, versus pressing the seed itself into the furrow bottom with an in-furrow firming device such as Keeton or seed-lock wheel.  (Rebounders don't do any seed firming -- they only control seed bounce.)  What occurs with the V-Slice insert does nothing to promote seed-to-soil contact -- apparently you are still relying on your closing wheels mashing soil from the surface all the way down to the seed to accomplish this function, and this has drawbacks in the more firm and moist conditions found in no-till versus tilled seedbeds.

For no-till, it's much better to form the furrow entirely with the cutting action of blades, rather than the pressure of dragging a point thru the soil, especially a point that severely compacts the area where you want to germinate seeds and grow roots.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,
