Subject: RE: Evolution of balers

I was told that McCormick invented two knotters. The first one was known as the Deering knotter, and it worked great. McCormick used it on their binders for years. When John Deere and New Holland started making balers they bought the rights to the Dearing knotter and paid a royality for each one they produced. I was told that they pay the royality to this day, but maybe the agreement has expired by now. When McCormick wanted to market a baler of their own, they couldn't use the Deering knotter because it was under contract to JD and NH. So they invented the second knotter that was called the McCormick knotter. That knotter was used on the McCormick and IH balers and didn't work as good as the Deering Knotter. Maybe someone knows more details about this. I was told this by a long time IH and NH dealer who I believe knew what he was talking about.
