What I don't get is the article says the engineers thought the falls would cease flowing if the rubble at the base was not cleared?? HUH?? seems to me that regardless of the amount of rubble at the base,as long as the start of the falls was higher then the base the falls would continue to flow,,, water flows downhill does it not??? May not have been nearly as impressive, but the water would continue to fall.
I wonder if removing that rubble would have made the falls undercut faster. A deeper drop and no rock rubble to disapate some of the energy of falling water.
Kind of a breakwater type effect from the rubble.
