Subject: Re: what to do with parents

Minnesota
I've read these posts with interest. I've 'been there' too, with difficult parents. Without going in to detail, for me there came a time to decide that ignoring the verbal abuse and meanness for the sake of 'trying to get along' had to come to an end. My husband and children were suffering hurt and pain and it was not fair to them or me to keep exposing ourselves to more and more and more and more. Trying to talk things out didn't work and doesn't work with people who believe they are always right. I've known for 30+ years that I'm out of the will; my husband said a long time ago that money isn't worth the pain and suffering we'd have to go through to stay in the will. He's right.

grainfarmer1, I feel for you. It's hard. You mentioned that your mother cannot be trusted and is manipulative; in my opinion, she will not change. You also mentioned that your father abused you as a child, but you didn't say if it was emotional, sexual or physical abuse.........guess this is the part that REALLY would scare me; to have your children living across the street from an abuser!!!!! Man, YOU have GOT to protect your children from this sort of person, no matter who he is and whether or not he is your father. You don't say how old your children are; but YOU are their protector. Stop feeling guilty about hurting your parents' feelings and do what you have to do to protect your family! If your wife isn't comfortable with them living across the street......listen to her because YOU are the head of the family and her protector as well. Move. I don't know anyone, with a wife and children, who would choose to live in such close proximity to a known child abuser. Hope this helps. Let us know what you decide and how it all turns out. BTW, I don't think you're a spoiled brat :)
