Hagen Brothers farms,Goodrich ND
We always trained our dogs to live along with the cats, just like any other farm animal. Any dog on the place learned two set in stone rules from the first day, you will not chase cars and you will not chase your fellow farm critters unless instructed to do so, and then only cattle.
Depending on the dog's temperment, that was everything from accept but ignore, to our last one who adopted the gaggle of cats.

Our last dog was a little male Blue Heeler , he liked his gaggle of barn cats .
He would herd them away from anything he thought was a danger to them. He groomed them in his doggy way, lips pulled back and chew then lick their fur.
The cats saw him as the big brother, liked the protection and the grooming felt like kind of a sloppy form of petting.

If he thought anything threatened his cats, he was instantly between the cats and the threat with a mouth full of bare teeth.
Quite the little guy, he had a personality kind of like the old dog in the attached picture.
