Was watching show on trains the other evening on History channel and I never knew this before, but trains carry sand on them in a compartment and they use the sand to drop on the rails right in front of the drives to give traction if needed going up steeper grades. There is a fill tube on the left hand side of an engine (forward end of course), it looks like a regular fuel fill tube, but they dump sand in it.
