Fontanelle, IA | I've been using the Minnesota Speed Scouting Method the past 2 years and have gotten along well with it. The basic premise of it is:
40 or more aphids/plant = Infected Plant
If 80-85% of your plants on your scout are Infected = Spray the field
Aphids are like Cows:
I come from a cow-calf farm where we always move cows from pasture to pasture based upon grass condition. A pasture has only so much grass in a given period. If you turn 250 cows out in the pasture, the pasture lasts for a day. If you turn 50 cows into the same pasture, then the pasture may last for 4-5 days. I look at aphids and cows as cumulative grazers....... they only can graze for a specific time before they overgraze your pasture (or beanfield) and hurt the ultimate yield.
Just my simple way of thinking.... but I never was fastest and sharpest tool in the shed :-)
Good Luck!
PS. I sprayed 1 field of Pioneer 92M91's today. They were planted on May 5 and treated with Cruiser Max. All of my aphids were in the lower 1/2 of the canopy. There were plenty of white flies to signal the aphids are here in SW Iowa. | |
