Saronville NE | We have been experimenting with intensive grazing under irrigation.
Been doing it on a 15 acre pivot next to feedyard. Up to 9-10 weeks with 3 pairs to acre. I think on larger scale where can redrill another feed behind what they grazed off 5 -6 mobths is possible with 2 pair to acre.
$400 rent on a 80 so $32k
$80 worth of seed for 80. $6400
Manure from other part of cattle operstion so basically spread cost.
Lots of labor.
Have a pivot corner for sacrifice area to feed when really muddy so dont tromp feed in ground.
So we'll say $40k a graze period and 150 pairs. Thats $1.77 a day for 150 days or $267 a pair. Half of what rent and freight is here for grass.
Personally i think stockers work better on it vs cows more head and longer graze time.
But both seem to pencil.
Edit.
So way my mind works if i planted corn w 240 bpa yield goal w irrigated expenses in our area id be $4.48 so $24 acre profit.
But i can save $250 a pair on grass rent. I know which males more sense to me. Now $6 corn would change that
