Saronville NE | MU i think yr spot on.
You can maximize the acres you have vs trying to rent or buy more. Takes lots of acres of grass to expand much. But at least here with irrigation i can double crop. So that feed you chopped off a quarter say can feed alot of cows then still grow 200+ bu corn for cashflow needs. So need less acres. Weve done it long enough now. Have found our breedback is better than grass. Calves will compete size wise as good grass calves. Cows stay fleshier to handle winter better. Biggest thing is adding shades. Having a few acres of grass next to lots to let calves still graze grass lightly for health reasons.
It works!! Most here dont want to do it. Biggest excuse we dont want chores year round even though itll make them more money.
Pasture rent and freight here combined is basically $500-600a pair for 5 months anymore. | |
