Western Oregon | 1st tillage tractor was a used 1970 4020, P.S hfwa. Traded for a 4430 cab, P.S. hfwa in the fall of 1972, added a new 4630 in '75. Traded the 4430 for a 4440 the first year of the 40 series, 4640 the next year along with a 4240. All were hfwa and P.S. with cabs. 4840 2 years later. Downsized in '88, sold 4840 with 1 farm, 4640 with another and bought 300 acres close to home farm. Changed from wheat to grass seed along with the peppermint and cannery crops, just fewer acres. When I bought the 4240 P.S. hfwa, I put radials on it with no liquid ballast, just 3 sets of rear wheel weights and a full rack of front weights. I could run what I had run with the 4430 before, 5-18" 1350/1450 plow. 16' heavy harrow, disk and field cultivator. I had 4-4240's at one time. I had to get out of farming in '92. Never went newer than the 40 series. I leased bigger 55 and 60 series for a V-sub soiler but never liked the new P.S. Son has a 4040 and my old 2550 row crop 4x4 with cab. My favorite tractor was the 4240, cab, controls and hfwa, like a super 4020, light, good power, nimble and comfortable with a good comfortable cab. We ran 18.4-38 clamp on duals instead of the heavy rear cast center, weight, liquid ballast, and axle duals for the heavy tillage tractors.
I really liked the hfwa, just enough to pull the tractor around the corners in high, bigger front tires rode much better. Great seeding tractors. I ran a lot of smaller, older row crop tractors of all makes before the 4240's, great upgrade with the Soundguard cabs and the non turbo 466. I liked the mechanical 4x4 on the 50 series but liked the 8 speed powershift of the 40 series so never upgraded to the newer tractors, just coasted along and enjoyed the 40 series....James | |
