| I believe there have been lower ratios available for some time. Generally paired with a transmission with the top gear being direct drive 1:1 ratio versus an overdrive in the top two. The lowest gears in the trans are then a deeper reduction as well. Makes it drive virtually the same as a “standard” transmission. I figured it was done to try and get a tiny bit more mpg with no parasitic loss to gear ratios in the transmission at highway speeds. I have a volvo with 2.47 rear ratio and direct drive transmission. Turns maybe 100 rpms lower at highway speeds. | |
