NW KS/ SC ID | If low miles per year, I'd say gasser. Hard to beat a 8.1 Chevy or a 2 valve triton, or fast forward to a 6.2 or 7.3 Ford. If mostly pavement I'd be inclined to lean towards the Chevy. The 8.1 will get better mpg with a heavy load over a 6.0L Vortec. Plus the only automatic I don't hate towing with is the Allison 1000. For the Ford, if 2V triton get the zf manual. 4r100 is durable enough, but sucks power and the driving experience is similar to barefoot stepping in warm dog dookie. If new enough super duty for a Torqshift 5 or 6 speed automatic, those are decent enough.
For a low cost diesel, I sure like the old 6.5 Chevy diesels, reliable if maintained properly. You gotta drive them like a non intercooled idi that they are, if you try to drive one like a 6.7 Cummins or power stroke you'll probably blow it up.
Anyone I know with HEUI doesn't have one anymore. Call me crzy but they don't seem to be the pinnacle of reliability like people act like they are.
My opinion, The only Dodge worth buying is a Cummins powered one with a manual transmission. They ride and handle like a Ford and wear like a Chevy, so kind of the worst of everything rolled together. Lol
I love my Chevys for long road trips, but they do have their negatives for heavy off highway usage.
Budget and yearly mileage and expectations would help narrow it down. | |
