Subject: RE: Soil testing strip till fertilized feilds

Most guys that I'm aware of that are band applying fertilizer, are reducing rates by at least a third. Why? Nutrient uptake is more efficient with fertilizer in bands. The concentrations are much higher in those specific bands, so the plants have an easier time accessing it. As far as "removal rate" of banded vs broadcast, then yes, removal should be the same either way. But one of the reasons guys are going to banding is to reduce rates. You can get the same yields using less fertilizer, and not draw down soil tests. We banded with the planter for several years and saw this ourselves. We no longer do, mainly because of time and equipment constraints.
