Answer to Jim in Sk: The answer to your question is yes and no. Yes, you can take a gov't loan for $4.56 (there is talk it may even be higher for 2010) BUT when the 9 month loan is up (if you haven't sold it in the meantime) and you turn the grain over to the gov't, you PAY THE DIFFERENCE to them if you don't have #1 HAD. In fact, what's crazy about it is--you can't even take a loan for less than 4.56 (if you know your quality is bad) so unless you can manage your money (don't spend the whole loan check) you will owe them money that you don't have.
However, another option would be to simply not take a loan on all your bushels. On our farm it seems to take all the bushels at highest price you can get, then you're still short. Not easy in the US either, but we don't have CWB.
