Subject: RE: Feedin' taters follow up

Olivetroad, just my thoughts, long time ago I had a feedlot in Idaho here beg to feed cattle for us. They received a lot of potato waste and mixed in ration. I recall it was a slurry in pits. Very hot feed, great for feeding fat cattle. However, we took them Holstein replacement heifers. I was young and dumb, those cattle looked great, and we bred them there and trucked home calvy. Well, they never lasted in milking herd. Two lactations and they were gone, blowed their feet off them bad feet. Never again did I push replacement cattle like that again. They were feeding on the gain, sure looked nice. I've known a few guys locally receive seed potato culls here in the valley. They are small spuds, but all the guys took and ran them over with wheel loaders before dropping in mixers.
