I don't have any data to back it up but I believe it takes more than a .1" to get it safe in the soil. We are very dry on top right now so i am guessing at least a .25" to get it safe.
To the OP, I like to stream or dribble it on. Applied to bare soil will lose less than applied to high residue. Streaming or dribbling helps lower losses also.
