![](/profile/get-photo.asp?memberid=6359&type=profile&rnd=788) Cedar Rapids, Iowa | In our case, we had a 30x80 sitting empty at a site that used to be a hog farm. It is also the furthest from our grain dryer. We put slightly wet corn in it (16-19%) and deliver it sometime in the winter/spring. It's cheaper to take the moisture doc than to transport to the dryer and dry it. We already had the vac, so all it cost us was the pipe on the side and the labor to put it there.
Filling with the vac is slow. I'm going to guess we get about 1000 bu/hr through it. We fill it from land close by, so we park a wagon/semi over the pit, and just shuttle a grain cart from the combine to the truck. The vac won't shut off for several hours at a time. We usually have enough extra corn picked by noon to shut the combine down for an hour while the vac catches up.
If I was starting from scratch, a regular bin is nicer, simply because you can fill with an auger. However, it is hard to ignore existing storage.
