NWMO | I believe that if the kid is putting in 14-16 hour days during harvest and planting, enjoys the work, wants to be there and wants to stick around (even if you can’t guarantee they will after high school) you have to at least give them somewhat of a vote.
It’s about like farm employees, if you want them to stay and take a more vested interest in the operation you have to give them a more vested viewpoint of the farm.
I.E - we’re building a new machine shed, what color do you think we should use? We’re putting tires on the tractor, I prefer Michelins, what tires do you think would work? I need to put some tile risers in this field, should we do yellow or orange tops?
These are all things you’re already going to do, why not see what the younger generation thinks of what you’re already doing
It seems silly and small in relation to the bigger farm picture, but at least gives the kid some attachment to the farm he’s on. So that even if he moves away and comes back to visit one day he can point to that machine shed and explain to his wife why it’s red instead of white or blue… at least that’s the approach I’m going to take with my sons when their old enough | |
