You'll hear a lot of people complain about the shifting, door, and wheel base. We've had a 1086 on our farm since 1987. That tractor has over 15,000 hours on it, the head has never been off and it still runs excellent. The shifting can be solved by keeping everything in proper adjustment. I always laugh when people complain about how the door opens on the 86 Series IH's. They aren't bad to get in at all. I will gladly jump through that door than the door on a green competitor of the age. Not trying to start a war by saying that but IMHO the 86 Series IH's are a lot easier to get into. And as for the ride issue, they make really nice seats nowadays, if it's riding rough buy a nicer seat and that argument is over! They may not have as good of hydraulics or a powershift like the green one but you can now buy two 1086's for the price of one 4440, and those two 1086's will do a lot more work than just one 4440!
