Here's a simple non-spec example of how bins can pay. You have 10k bushel you want to sell to the ethanol plant. You are harvesting in early November, their current basis is 35 cents under. Their march bid is 20 cents under march, so perhaps 20 cents better than the fall bid. Right there, even including interest expense, would be 800 bucks gain on 10k. On the speculative side, just a couple weeks ago the plants were 5 cents OVER as they were trying to secure corn. This would be over a 2500 dollar gain on the 10k bushels of corn.

Yes it is more work and management. You have to crawl up and check the bins for condition. Electricity for fans. Augers. But I can't think of a single successful operator around here who doesn't use bins.
