| You’re right, with little to no calving experience heifers can be a train wreck.
However, I haven’t seen any “bargains” on bred cows in the last 6 months. For example using cull price, a $1500-1800 cow on a 5yr note has to raise a calf bringing $350-420 a year just to pay her off. Sounds easy with $1600-2000 calves and these cull prices. Now pencil the last 3 years of the note being paid off with feeder calves at $850-900 and culls under $700/hd. That is exactly how guys got in trouble during the last run up. Again not trying to be perpetually negative, there will be a perfect time to jump in within the next 3 years. | |
