Fighting the knotters on my 273. Changed the Bill Hooks, brass rollers and twine knives and still coming up a loss. Right side knotter (Looking from rear of baler) is not tying a good knot. Are than any adjustments I can/need to make, or is there any other part I need to change. Left side knotter never misses a beat and right side will tie one knot (poor knot) out of every 15 or so bales. Any advice is much appreciated.

BC, Canada | Need more info on the knot. Poor knot doesn't describe what's happening. Knot too loose and pulls apart, tails too short, tail on one end only, which end..... Each problem has its own cause and solution. Just trying to help. I will post a few pics on the morning from my JD baler manual about knot problems and possible causes.

Pulling knot apart. Second part of knotting process is what's not completing I believe.

Montana | I ran a 1425 self propelled baler and after about three years, 60 thousand bales they replaced the knotter stack at huge cost to me. I know the book used to have good pictures and sometimes it was needle timing and sometimes it was the twins clamps if the bill hooks were new. We had a 285 with the German steel knotter and there was a little roller that had to be lubed and kept rolling or it got a flat spot. The 285 was the best of the balers i ever used. There is also wedges you can bolt in the bale chamber to slow down hay on one side or the other and sometimes bale shape and tension will affect knots. We had a great old baler mechanic and if he said it needed a new knotter stack he was right, I think the now knotter for my 1425 was 12 hundred dollars but once installed it baled like crazy until I traded it off on a round baler. I started with a new holland 77 pulled by a john Deere A in about 1962 and ran a lot of square balers and I know that twine clamps have to hold just right and knives to cut twins need to be very sharp and bill hooks need not to be worn and needles must be properly timed. I hope you get it going, Nothing more frustrating than broken bales. My father in law had the mechanic put all new bearings on the plunger every year, sharpen the knives very sharp and set the knotter just right and I would make 10 thousand bales an not miss a knot.

North Dakota | I have the same baler. couple years ago ours did same thing. there is a tiny roll pin that fell out and would not keep those little pinchers shut to make the knot. put a roll pin back in and no more troubles. hope it helps ya

central ohio..between Springville and Millbrook. | have you replaces the twine disc Springs? one of the causes for knots pulling out (short tails) is the flat spring on the twine disc. replace that spring and tighten it down until only a penny will slide between the top of the spring and the frame. make sure it is timed correctly as well. I can take a picture for you today if you like. it's not pulling apart because it is hanging up on the bill hook, is it? that's a totally different problem...but if you've already changed the bill hook and set the tension right there that's probably ok. West Central Indiana | Check the springs in the hay dogs that hold the bale while the plunger retracts. That was the main problem with ours pulling the knot apart. Also switched from 130lb plastic twine to 170lb plastic twine. What part of the world are you in? There is an Amish guy in Marshall, IN who is really good on knotters.

mercer county, il | when you changed the billhook did you check the billhook cam and spring? If the twines will not stay In the billhook it will not knot, and then as JCM mentioned, check the timing of your twine disc, and it's tension spring as well, then run the baler by hand, watching the needle to see where it drops the twine, the needle should ALMOST hit the twine disc and the frame of the knotter right above the twine disc LOOK at you other knotter since it is working, mimic its settings, check the pull on the billhook cam on the bad knotter, and make it match the good knotter etc small square baler knotters seem overly simple once you mess with a big square baler enough

SC KY | I have a neighbor that is a square baker whisperer. what a blessing. One thing you can try is to disconnect the pto and trip the knotter and run it through by hand slowly. It's works best if you can get someone else to do that while you watch what is going on.

central ohio..between Springville and Millbrook. | here's a pic for you of the twine disc Spring set with a penny. all the others have great ideas too...but when I have a problem with knots pulling out this is more often than not the problem. Huntley Montana | Those "springs" go bad now & then. I use to double them before JD came out with a different spring. Ha dogs could be another problem, along with feeder fork setting.

I am having the same problem with my 275 NH. One side tyes perfect and the other side will tye one out of five times. Haven't looked at it since last year. I think my brass rollers have some flat spots in them. How important are they to be perfectly round. I think if I remember I couldn't get it perfectly timed right also. Could the drive chain have jumped a cog on the drive sprocket? In order to diagnose the problem do you start turning by hand with no twine in it and no hay or do you have to have the twine threaded in the needles? I still think some of my problem was with the twine disc but not sure.
