PROSPECT, TENNESSEE | As most of you know I’m big on no till and cover crops. I have drastically changed my soil profile in the last 15 to 20 years. But, now this demon he’s reared it’s ugly face. My tile lines are plugging with roots!
We fixed one Saturday, and noticed water standing in another spot after an inch of rain over the weekend.
I was hoping it was just excessive water build up from the other plug not allowing water to quickly run through. This morning I have a lake.
Tiles are three foot deep or more, 4” feeders dumping into 6” dump line. Tile has been in for 30 years or longer. This is my fourth instance with this field. Seems to always happen just a few weeks after burn down, after crop is up, which I guess makes sense.
Looks as if I will loose half of this field to wetness, and traffic to repair.
Local tile guy has quit, only have options to knowledgeable guys on drainage with mini ex. Isn’t affordable @ 80 an hour, plus pipe. I will say everything he has done works excellent , but averages $5 a foot. There is about 5000 foot in this field, and is rented ground.
I have to try to patch it up this crop, but not sure which way to go from here. Elderly landlord, 3 years left on lease.
Need someone like we had that can trench in tile for less than five bucks a foot. Anyone know of such an outfit that would come here this fall?
Will the covers continue to do this? Seems I have gotten soil structure to allow roots to go deep, quickly.
