Subject: Old house remodel. Bricks in wall?

Sw. Ill
Fields are wet here so I've been working on our investment house in town. I am gutting the master bedroom and found columns of bricks in the wall. I have never seen this and I was wondering if anyone had. It's a 1.5 story house and the bricks between the studs seem to extend up to the second floor but I'm not sure on that since we have not torn into those rooms. When I knocked out the cement lath walls the bricks just sort of crumble out. I'm told the house was built in 1920.
