Subject: RE: Old house remodel. Bricks in wall?

Cherokee County, Northwest Iowa
Story I always heard growing up was that the previous house on the farm was blown across the road by a tornado. I have no idea when the replacement house was built (1920's?) that I grew up in. Tornado went thru farm in 1959, took half the buildings but left the house (my father stood at kitchen window and watched half the farm buildings blow away-Mom always said that it finally hit Dad what had happened mid morning-how dangerous it was.)

Dad did some remodeling in early 1960's, so he must have known how the house was constructed-I was too young to pay attention.

Fast forward to 1983-Dad sold house to neighbor kid, who hired a local housemover with an excellent reputation-they got all the jacks in place, went to raise the house, wouldn't budge. Foreman walked over to Dad and asked "Are there bricks in the wall?" answer was "yes, the whole first floor". Foreman turned around, turned up the pressure on the jacking system, and up went the house.
