Ludington/Manistee MI area | Heifer was in labor just before dusk on Thursday, we finished feeding and looked over the situation and decided to pull the calf. Cow was just laying, she looked like she was in labor for awhile and wore out Before pulling we noticed a rectal prolapse. We got calf out and in front of her she started to lick it off. Prolapse was certainly no better. To add to the situation cow refused stand after birth and calf was CHILLED we ended up pulling calf inside and worked to get it warmed. Wife checked cow in morning and got her up and it ate. We got the pair inside. Vet said keep it clean and put bag balm on it so it gets cleaned atleast once a day. It’s slightly better but still grapefruit size. Cow appears unfazed by it, has decent appetite, keeps her calf spotlessly clean, calf is spry and growing.
Newer to the calving end of the biz thoughts on care? Vet is out of town till midweek. |
