Subject: Found out how to make money with cows

SC Wisconsin
With free feed! This was 18 acres of first crop, some spots were thick with brome and orchard grass, but there was a big portion of it that was 75% or better of alfalfa. This is a neighboring horse boarding farm, they used to board 60-70 show horses and do training a decade ago. My brother and i got out first jobs there in 2004 when i was 14 and he was 12 cleaning and bedding horse stalls. The owner tries to make all his own hay on small squares and like everyone else the last couple years he has struggled getting it made dry. Every year i probably make 20-40 round bales of bedding quality hay that was cut 3 weeks earlier and been raked and tedded 5 times. By then he just wants it off the field. Last fall he came to me and said how about you just come clear off most my first cutting and make baleage so i can start with a clean slate for second crop. Most years he is basically starting second cutting at the same time he is finishing 1st so then the fields are all screwed up.

Anyways, he says he is just glad he doesnt have to deal with first cutting and doesn't want any payment. I know he likes new york strips because he has given me hay in the past and always reminds me he likes new yorks when i ask him what i owe him, so hes got a bunch of them coming his way now. He did want me to cut high so it comes back quick, so i left 2.5-3" of stubble and got 55 bales, 4'x5' that i would guess are around 1600-1700#. My baler has knives in it and this stuff cut really hard. Cut it Saturday afternoon late, baler was on it 24 hours later and we finished wrapping them at 10pm last night.Blew a hydraulic line on the way to the field so that put me an hour behind, so some of the grassier spots were getting dry but it is beautiful feed, alfalfa was budding and grass was a day or 2 past boot. Im going to have to limit feed my cows or wear a rain suit when i walk their pen.
