Subject: Fertilizer tender bed sidewall strength?

Kingdom of Callaway - Fulton, Mo 65251
I have a Adams fertilizer tender bed we use hauling fertilizer. It has four compartments, and a auger that swings around.

Each of the four compartments has a rack and pinion type set up to open and close the doors. They are rusted and in poor condition. I need to replace them. There is no way to access them without cutting a hole on the side in four places. I had to cut one open today to get the door to open.

My question is: Do I have to weld the pieces I cut off back onto the side? I would like to just leave it open for future access. But does the bed need the metal to support the bins?
