Subject: 401 and the down turn

68340

I don't have any of my 401 in the stock market.

Does anybody else on here?

People say that the value of their 401 has gone down.  Well sure, but have you really had a "loss"?

If I started with say, $10,000 in a 401 and put in say, $5,000 every year for 10 years I should have a min of $60,000, figuring no growth.  So maybe your 401 k is worth $ 90,000 today.  When the market was at 14,000 it might have been worth greatly more. Still a person has gained $30,000 over those 10 years.  Not great, but not a loss by any means.  If you had less than $60,000, then you would have had a loss.

So have people had a "true" loss in their 401 or just a reduction in value?  Big difference.
