Subject: Overhangs on a machine shed?

SC Wisconsin
Is there a reason for the 1' or 2' overhangs on all the machine sheds i see being built? I think it makes the building look nicer but not sure if thats the only reason or if it helps keep the water away from the building or helps it breathe better having the soffit or not? Im going to be putting a machine shed up this summer and while i would like to have the overhang, i would rather take the extra thousand or 2 bucks it would take to put an overhang on and use that money to make it an extra 10 foot wider or 10 foot longer or whatever. I do plan on putting rain gutters on the building regardless so i think that addresses the water away from the building issue. Im a young guy on a budget and i try to choose function over fashion and i dont have a bottomless checkbook so i need to watch my dollars and cents Thanks
