Subject: Back to putting hay in feeders

Driftless SW Wisconsin

Even though the forecast for the next week is not good and temperatures are still very cold for this time of year, it is time to put hay back in feeders. For the past month or so I have been putting hay bales out without rings to make sure every cow and calf has access to get enough calories to stay warm in these ridiculous temps and wind chills.

I snapped a pic of some heifers today. They seemed to have weathered the cold, snow and wind fairly well so far and done it on hay and mineral only.  When not eating hay they like to turn sideways to the sun in a wind-sheltered spot.  In the pic is a makeshift windbreak of some 2 year old stalk bales that are only good for windbreak.  I'm very glad theoretical start of calving is April 29.

We're hoping for a gradual thaw so we don't get the extensive flooding this Kickapoo river watershed has seen in recent years.
