Subject: Coal mines in Pittsburg County, Oklahoma

West of Broken Bow
One of my grandfathers worked them in his younger years. He was a powder monkey. I used to drive by several of the old mines and always wondered if things would change to where the area would once again be considered worth digging up again. Not sure if any of the McAlester mines are still going. There were quite a few deaths way back then that were caused from gases being ignited.

I had hypothesized long ago that it was either all the mining or the railroads arriving or maybe a combination of the two that caused/contributed to so many pine and oak trees to disappear from the hill sides and valleys. There were several boiler powered sawmills.
