North Central Illinois | Does anyone have any experience with these? I have an opportunity to grow them on contract. If they yield 40 bu/acre, they would gross as much as an average wheat crop. I still have beans standing where I had planned to plant wheat. So, since wheat is kind of hit or miss planted this late, I am thinking of trying the peas. It's organic ground, so I need something other than corn or soybeans to keep my rotation going right.
Is 50 bu. A reasonable yield goal on good soil? Can I direct cut them, or do I need a swather?
I have previously only grown peas as a cover crop. My biggest concern is this is a wetter field of mine, and I don't know how much wetness they can tolerate. I am hoping to get the field tiled next summer after harvest. | |
