Walcott, IA...by the big truck stop
This is a follow-up to one of my previous posts:

Corn is still looking good, but is only about to 1/2 milk line. I don't know that the kernels will get quite as deep as I had initially thought as my area only received 0.3"-0.5" of rain in August. Maybe some of you will have some input on kernel size with respect to the dime, but I think they have some good depth. I used 90k - 80k kernels / bushel for the range in the estimates. Overall, the corn plant health looks good and things are green. There are some spots that are firing at the bottom, but only half way up to the ear so far.

I was setting up some data on the combine so I only had time to look at 2 fields. The 1197 is looking really good and I failed to notice my bag split open while walking out of the field (they were so heavy I guess I didn't notice in my rush) thus I only ended up with a 5 ear sample. I have also been interested in the field with 1365 and 63-60. Although they are the same maturity, the 63-60 was further along into pollination. Maybe it was under more stress at that time causing the tip back compared to the 1365. The 1365 is really consistent throughout the field as I pulled the 3 samples from different areas of an 80. The 1365 and 63-60 pictured next to each other were pulled side-by-side and all samples were pulled using the method in the previous post.

Beans, well I think my estimate is spot on. They really branched well and podded nicely, but we are still a rain away from bursting the pods with big beans. I think they will still be pretty decent, but they just don't have that plump look to the pods this year; might be disappointing. Bean stand in this field ended up between 85k and 120k with the early planting and slow emergence.

FYI, dime reference pictures are 1197, 1365, 63-60.
