Southeast WI | Few weeks ago Garvo posted pics showing some really nice early growth corn (tilled ground I believe) compared to a notill field. The inference was the notill corn was not going to do very well. That may or may not be the case as early growth seldom proves anything.
This field in the pictures has been notill corn on corn since 2000, strip tilled the past 3 years. I have had a fert plot on this field for about 10 years, 2*2, in-furrow, planter N or not and various combinations. Also has a check of no planter starter or planter N. When I sidedress I make sure I adjust the rate so total N is the same for each treatment. This is a 3 rep plot. All planted and harvested with field scale equipment. Background fertility is EH for P and above opt for K. Elemental S goes on in fall with 100-150 lbs of potash.
That's the background for this post. Pics were taken today, I sidedressed about a week ago so the 0 plots are greening up well and the other plots have looked pretty good all spring. The two pics showing height differences are the 0 at planting and the 2nd one is my normal farm practice of 4-10-10 @ 17 gpa 2*2 and 32% @ 12-14 gpa 3*0. Other treatments are somewhere between these two.
I added one more pic at the end, that's NKau helping me out a couple days after sidedressing. I wanted one more wider view pic put in.
