SE PA | We mow with a JD 945 impeller machine and NH H7450 rubber roll machine. Have noticed that in light stands of alfalfa that the NH with rubber does a poor job of mowing- leaves too many plants not mowed off. JD machine cuts clean in same conditions. NH does good in heavy, newer, thicker stands.
Have messed with everything from cutting height to ground and PTO speed to down pressure and nothing improved performance of NH machine.
I had heard that rubber roll machines create downdraft that lays plants forward, so possibly in a lighter stand the machine is essentially mowing plants that are similar to downed or laying conditions and hence the poor performance, where thicker stands stay up right better for the blades to cut.
