Subject: Welding on a hydraulic cylinder

central ohio
I built a tree puller a few years ago and would like to put a shield on the hydraulic cylinder to protect the hydraulic hoses. I was wondering if it was OK to weld on the cylinder. I would think I would want to remove the cylinder and empty out all the hydraulic fluid. Also need to make sure I am as far away from orings and seals as possible. Any advice or hints would be appreciated.
Jeff

Edit: It is a welded cylinder not tie rod style
