Subject: Fattening cull cows / clamping for castration?

Columbia City, Indiana
I've got a couple of older cows I'll need to get rid of, and I wondered if it would pay to pen them up for a month or so and try to put some more condition on them? I'm thinking not but not really sure.

Also, the last couple of years I've had the vet cut the bull calves when they're weaning age, but I know a local guy who feeds lots of cattle who would probably "clamp" them if I wanted him to. What are the pros and cons of this method? He told me they would swell up quite a bit for a few days. I used to band them as babies but I missed a nut that way a few years ago so the last 2 years I had the vet cut them when he preg checked the cows. Got along fine that way, just curious about the other method I guess.
