Subject: Backflow preventor, what do you know about them??

After cleaning out the basement from a second round of storm sewer backup into our house, I'm pi**ed to say the least. 40+ years with no water in the basement, now twice in about three years.

The town I live in will run and hide even though it's their problem, the sewer had a blockage under the street. They pushed out the block and the water went down. However, wet carpeting, ruined furniture, and about 2 days of nothing but cleaning, washing, and disinfecting...... yeah.. fun.

Talked to a guy that works for a dirt mover, he mentioned others in our town are having similar problems and are installing backflow preventors in their drain lines. Claims city doesn't like them, but has not outlawed them.

What do you know about them? Cost to install?? Any maintenence/upkeep/blockage issues?? How well do they work? Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Dave
